»DON' T FORGET OCTOBER 18TH, THE INTERNATIONAL WHITE FLAG DAY!«

The Akademie Schloss Solitude reminds of Johannes Cladders’ initiative

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18TH 2016, AKADEMIE SCHLOSS SOLITUDE

On October 18, 1988, the artist Johannes Cladders raised a white flag on the former demarcation line between east and west Jerusalem. In honor of this unique campaign, which did not necessarily meet approval from the local bureaus and population, the Akademie Schloss Solitude introduced the “White Flag Day” 20 years later. With this, it wants to encourage people in the entire world to raise a white flag—whose symbolic language can be understood by everyone—on their house or window.

Participants are asked to photographically document their flags on the White Flag Day and to send their documentation via e-mail to whiteflag@akademiesolitude.de.
All pictures will be documented here on this blog to give an impression of the great international response to this action.

The Akademie will also hang a white flag on the castle dome on October 18, 2016.

Johannes Cladders wrote the following about the white flag:
"It consists of a piece of fabric or any other comparable material. Its dimension and shape can be described objectively. Besides the white color it doesn’t convey any further information. For this reason it is open to any kind of individual and/or corporate interpretation: From the symbolic color to endless meanings in the context of politics, war and peace, religion, philosophy, sciences, moral, history of culture and art. The white flag means freedom. When you raise the flag on the 18th of October you make a statement".

Johannes Cladders (*1924, † 2009 in Krefeld) was the founding director of the Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladbach, and received the German architecture prize in 1984 for the museum’s new building along with Hans Hollein. Cladders served as the Akademie Schloss Solitude’s jury chairman from 1989 to 1992. In additional to his activity as museum director, Cladders was active as an artist under the name © for Caesar.

Eine Aktion der Akademie Schloss Solitude erinnert an die Initiative von Johannes Cladders

DIENSTAG, 18. OKTOBER 2016, AKADEMIE SCHLOSS SOLITUDE

Am 18. Oktober 1988 hisste der Künstler Johannes Cladders an der ehemaligen Demarkationslinie zwischen Ost- und Westjerusalem eine weiße Fahne. Anknüpfend an diese einmaligen Aktion, die nicht unbedingt die Zustimmung der dortigen Behörden und Bevölkerung fand, führte die Akademie Schloss Solitude zwanzig Jahre später einen »Tag der weißen Fahne« ein. Damit möchte sie alljährlich Menschen in der ganzen Welt animieren, für einen Tag an ihrem Haus oder Fenster eine weiße Fahne zu hissen, deren symbolische Sprache von allen verstanden werden kann.

Alle Teilnehmer werden gebeten, ihre persönliche Aktion zum »Tag der weißen Fahne« fotografisch zu dokumentieren und per E-Mail an whiteflag@akademie-solitude.de zu senden. Alle Fotos und Rückmeldungen werden hier gezeigt und vermitteln einen guten Eindruck der großen internationalen Resonanz.

Auch die Akademie wird am 18. Oktober 2016 wieder eine weiße Fahne auf der Kuppel des Schlosses Solitude hissen.

Zur weißen Fahne schrieb Johannes Cladders:
»Sie besteht aus einem Stück Textil oder aus ähnlichem Material. Ihre Maße und Form sind objektiv beschreibbar. Daneben enthält sie außer der weißen Farbe keine weitere visuelle Information. Daher ist sie auch für jede Art individueller wie korporativer Interpretation offen: Von der Farbsymbolik bis hin zu den zahllosen Bedeutungen im Kontext von Politik, Krieg und Frieden, Religion, Philosophie, Wissenschaft, Moral, Kulturgeschichte und Kunst. Die weiße Fahne signalisiert Freiheit. Wer sie am 18. Oktober hisst, setzt ein Zeichen dafür.«

Johannes Cladders (* 1924, † 2009 in Krefeld) war Gründungsdirektor des Museums Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach und erhielt 1984 zusammen mit Hans Hollein den deutschen Architekturpreis für dessen Neubau. 1990 bis 1993 war Johannes Cladders Juryvorsitzender der Akademie Schloss Solitude. Parallel zu seiner Tätigkeit als Museumsdirektor war Johannes Cladders zudem als Künstler unter dem Namen © wie Caesar tätig.
